The following data has been transcribed from the parish marriage register held at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Ballycastle, Co. Mayo. This Ballycastle parish register covers the civil parishes of Doonfeeny and Kilbride.
Content: The register starts in 1869 and the pages for the early years up to 1880 have been previously photographed and published by the Genealogical Society of Utah in 1984. Copies are available on microfiche film #1279204 from the LDS Church. However, at the time of writing (Feb 2013) it is believed that the later years from 1880 onwards have not yet been transcribed and published. Hence, this new transcription starts initially at 1880 to cover the previously unpublished data. The records presented here will be updated periodically as the transcription progresses. Names of both parents are included in most entries, often with the maiden names of the mothers.
Transcription: Spelling tends to be phonetic or inconsistent and most first names are written in Latin. This transciption attempts to copy the original spelling, except that Latin names have been translated into English to make searching easier. The hand-writing is sometimes difficult to read and so may not be accurately transcribed. Where entries were occasionally duplicated on separate pages, both have been transcribed.
The register is over 150 years old and is showing its age. It was apparent during the transcription that some pages had fallen loose and had been replaced in the wrong position. This had the effect of lining up the incorrect wedding date and witnesses (on the RH page) with the wedding families (on the LH page). Where discrepancies were noticed, the pages were re-aligned by matching surnames and residences between the wedding families and witnesses, as most witnesses would have been family or neighbours.
